Why no Romanian company has a direct contract for gas acquisition with Gazprom?

No Romanian Government, Ministry or company has managed, in the past 14 years, to approach gas import by a direct contract with Gazprom and probably it will not happen in the coming years. This situation is exclusively due to Romanian officials, who in 2000 broke the existing conventions between Romania and Russia and allowed intermediaries and the increase in import gas prices in Romania. On October 25th 1996, a Convention was signed in Moscow between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Russian Federation, on the expansion of capacities of gas transit pipelines on the territory of Romania to increase gas supplies from the Russian Federation in third countries and in Romania, approved by GD 1369/1996. By GD 1369/1996, the “<<Autonomous Administration of Natural Gas “Romgaz” Medias>> shall take the necessary steps to fulfill the provisions of the Convention between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Russian Federation”.
